Ransomware - How to Prevent Infections

Ransomware – How to Prevent Infections
Ransomware is malicious software that is used to lock down or encrypt a user’s computer system until the user has paid a certain fee. It is a way for attackers to make money by holding the user’s data hostage. Most common delivery systems for ransomware systems are by:

Phishing
Emails are sent with malicious attachments that contain the ransomware feigning legitimate software

Security Holes
Some ransomware takes advantage of security holes in systems to place the software on the user’s machine without needing to trick users.

Automatic Download
Some malicious websites automatically download software onto a system once the user clicks on the link to the site.

The following steps are useful in protecting your system from becoming infected by ransomware:

- Do not provide personal information when answering an email,
or unsolicited phone call or text.
- Use reputable antivirus software and a firewall.
- Use content scanning and filtering on your mail servers.
- Keep your system updated.

And in the case that your system does become infected with ransomware, do not pay the ransom. There is no guarantee that you will regain access to your files. Instead, restore any infected files from a known good backup. Data restoration is the fastest and most efficient way to regain access to the data.
